Fraxel Skin Resurfacing can treat Actinic Keratosis (AK), the most common pre-cancer that results from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays. A 2013 study in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology helped to validate Fraxel for this purpose. AKs appear as dry, scaly, or crusty patches of skin. Because of their texture, AKs are easier to feel than see. The lesions are more commonly seen on the face, lips, ears, scalp, shoulders, neck, and the back of hands and forearms. While only a small percentage of AKs turn into skin cancer, the majority of squamous cell carcinomas start as AKs.
